Weeds Management Work:

Sea Spurge: A Management Plan for Sea Spurge has recently been developed. This plan aims to provide a strategic and co-ordinated approach to community-based management of sea spurge (Euphorbia paralias) on King Island. It provides a practical framework for the management of sea spurge, concentrating on on-ground work, while keeping in mind the need for integrated management including other weeds and issues of concern around the island's coastline. It provides volunteers, community groups, land managers, key stakeholders and professionals with a tool for attracting and applying human and financial resources that enable effective and strategic weed management actions.

Boneseed: The volunteer KI Weed Group is currently being funded to control Bridal Creeper and boneseed. This group has volunteered hundreds of hours to date and hope to eradicate both these weeds from KI through this project. Anyone interested in taking part should contact KINRMG.

Bridal creeper: tends to be in areas where there is also Asparagus fern.
These two plants are related, favour similar areas, and spread in the same way.

Asparagus fern: Asparagus is widespread on King Island, most of it has been mapped, and a management plan is to be developed. This will allow a works program to be funded, and people employed to undertake this.

Ragwort (Senecio jacobaea): DPIW and KINRMG through the NRM Facilitator have been working with landholders to map, give advice and reminders to control this weed. It has been found to be spreading throughout a number of King Island catchments, mainly in the south of the island. This is a declared weed, meaning anyone with ragwort on their property is required by law to manage it and prevent its spread.

Other Weeds projects:
Gorse: Landholders were funded to control this weed in 2006, with an agreement in place to follow this up for at least 3 years. Gorse is zoned for eradication on King Island.
Serrated Tussock: KI Weed Group was funded to control this grass at Red Hut in 2006, and will be funded again to follow this up in 2007.
